How gutter installation works

In brief
A gutter job is eight steps and usually one day. The old run comes off, at $1 to $2 a foot. The fascia gets checked, because everything hangs on it. The line is marked with a fall toward each outlet. Hangers go up at about 24 inches apart, or 16 in heavy snow. The gutter is hung, and if it is seamless it was rolled to the exact length of that wall minutes earlier by a machine on the truck. Corners, end caps and outlets are sealed or soldered depending on the metal. Downspouts go on with bands. Then the discharge is set so water lands away from the foundation, and not at it. 2.0The steps that decide whether it lasts
The fascia check is the one to insist on. Every hanger, and therefore the whole system, is carried by that board. Fascia costs $6 to $20 a foot to replace, and it is far cheaper to do while the gutter is already down. Berger adds a detail worth knowing: when the fascia board is less than 2 inches thick, the hanger fasteners must be driven into the rafter ends instead, which is what rafter hangers exist for.
Layout sets the slope, and slope is capacity. Fine Homebuilding states that pitching a gutter at 1/8 inch per foot multiplies the roof area it can drain by 1.4. Berger sets the floor: 1/16 inch per foot or less counts as a level gutter and earns no credit. The published standards run from 1/4 inch per 10 feet up to 5/8, and the detail is on gutter slope.
Position matters as much as pitch. Berger publishes a clearance table for how far the gutter should sit below the line the roof would follow if it continued: 1 inch on a 0 to 2 in 12 roof, 3/4 inch at 3 to 5 in 12, 1/2 inch at 6 to 8 in 12, and 1/4 inch at 9 in 12 or steeper. The point is that sliding snow and ice clear the gutter rather than tearing it off.
Hanger spacing is the sag insurance. Englert says about 24 inches, and 16 in heavy snow. Berger allows up to 36 and drops to 18 where ice and snow are long lasting. See gutter hangers for the full spread and the types.
3.0Where seamless changes the job
On a sectional job, step 5 is cutting sticks to length, mitering corners and joining lengths with connectors. On a seamless job, step 5 starts at the truck. Flat metal coil is fed through a roll forming machine that shapes it into finished gutter and cuts it to the exact length of that wall.
Englert's own architectural specification writes it as a rule: all gutters shall be in continuous length for each elevation, and no end laps are allowed. Roll formed 5 and 6 inch K-style is available up to 40 feet, per the KM Sheet Metal submittal drawing, which covers most house elevations in one piece.

The joint specification, which is where leaks start
Berger publishes a lap joint specification, and it is the clearest published statement of what a gutter joint should be.
- Overlap and rivet. Joints in gutters must be overlapped 1 inch and riveted on 2 inch centers, then soldered if the metal can be soldered.
- Metals that cannot be soldered. Sealant must be applied continuously inside the 1 inch lap, the sealed lap riveted on 1 inch centers, and all rivet applications must receive sealant after installation.
- Direction. Lapping joints in the direction of the flow is preferred, though gutter outlet connections may not allow it.
- Miters and elbows. Lock joints on miters and elbows should be checked and sealed or soldered.
- End caps and outlets. Flange laps require sealing or soldering.
Copper is the metal that gets soldered, with acid core solder at about $16.50 a pound. Aluminum, steel and vinyl get sealant. That is why a copper job needs a contractor who has soldered before, and why the joint count on a sectional run matters.
One more from Berger, for downspouts run against masonry: drill the holes, use metal hole inserts or sealant, and seal the wall penetrations. Driving pipe hook fasteners into brick mortar joints damages both the fastener and the wall.
4.0What to check before you pay
- Run water in. A hose at the far end of each run. It should reach the outlet and leave nothing standing.
- Sight the line. Stand at one end and look along the front lip. It should be straight, with an even fall.
- Count outlets. Against the length of each run. One per 20 to 30 feet, per how many downspouts.
- Check the discharge. Water should be carried clear of the house. The residential code, in expansive or collapsible soil areas, requires roof drainage discharged not less than 5 feet from foundation walls.
- Look behind the gutter. The gap between gutter and fascia should be closed, and the drip edge should direct water into the trough rather than behind it.
- Ask what thickness went up. Aluminum runs from .0185 stock at a big box store to .032 heavy gauge. It is the spec most often left off a quote.
5.0You may not need an installation at all
Plenty of people book an installation for a problem an installation does not fix. If water pours over the front in heavy rain, the cause is usually a clog, a low spot, or too few downspouts, and a new gutter hung the same way behaves the same way.
If the run drips at one joint or sags in one place, that is a seam or a hanger. A repair at a national average of $275 against a replacement at $2,200 to $5,000 is the real decision, and repair or replace works through it.

Common questions
How long does gutter installation take?
Most houses are one day. Seamless removes the slowest part, because the gutter is rolled to the exact length of each wall on site instead of being cut and joined. HomeGuide notes that limited access, where materials have to be hand carried or smaller equipment used, raises labor time and cost by 15 to 25 percent, so a tight lot or a steep yard can push a one day job longer.
What happens to the old gutters?
They come off first and get hauled away, and it is a line item. HomeGuide prices tear off at $1 to $2 per linear foot, and Angi gives a flat $150 to $300 for the job. On a 150 foot house that is $150 to $300 either way. Ask whether it is included, because it is the item most often quoted separately.
Should the fascia be checked before installation?
Always, and this is the step to insist on. Gutters hang on the fascia board, and if that wood is soft no hanger will hold. Fascia runs $6 to $20 a foot to replace. Berger also notes that when the fascia is less than 2 inches thick, hanger fasteners must be driven into the rafter ends instead.
What is the drip edge, and does it matter?
It is the metal flashing at the roof edge that directs water off the roof and into the gutter rather than behind it. It matters a lot: water appearing behind a gutter, staining the soffit, is usually a drip edge problem rather than a gutter problem. K-style gutter is made with hi-back and apron backs specifically to work with it.
How are gutter joints sealed?
It depends on the metal. Berger specifies that joints be overlapped 1 inch and riveted on 2 inch centers, then soldered if the metal can be soldered. On metals that cannot be soldered, sealant is applied continuously inside the 1 inch lap, the joint is riveted on 1 inch centers, and every rivet is sealed after installation. Copper gets soldered. Aluminum gets sealed.
What should I check when the crew leaves?
Four things. Run water into the high end of each run and watch it reach the outlet with nothing pooling. Look along the front lip for a straight line. Count downspouts against the run lengths. And check that discharge carries water away from the house rather than dropping it at the foundation.
